Hyundai Makes a Splash at the 2018 NAIAS in Detroit

The 2018 NAIAS/Detroit Auto Show is history, having just wrapped up another exciting and successful two-week event in Michigan. Boy, was there a lot to take in, especially if you’re a Hyundai fan!

During the event, Hyundai took the opportunity to unveil the next generation Veloster coupe, showing off some new, major design changes, including its sportier stance and longer hood. Air curtains reduce drag, and a center exhaust is now functional, not for looks alone. Up front, LED headlights/daytime running lights flank the new "pouring steel" cascade grille, and the rear also features new LED taillights.

The result is a sporty, tougher-looking, fun-to-drive 2019 Veloster that will retain the best features from past models (like the wide driver's side door) while adding some new ones that only make it better.

Impressive Inside & Out

The Veloster's new dash has an asymmetrical design that mirrors – complements, even -- the Veloster's funky exterior. The two front and two rear seats are either cloth, cloth-trimmed with leather, or leather -- in fact, each trim level gets its own unique colors, materials, and accents. In all, five trim grades will be offered for the 2019 Veloster when it hits the showroom at our Columbia Hyundai dealership later this spring:

  • 2.0 (equipped with either a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission)
  • 2.0 Premium (either transmission)
  • Turbo R-Spec (6-speed manual transmission)
  • Turbo (7-speed twin-clutch transmission with paddle shifters)
  • Turbo Ultimate (fully loaded, with either transmission)

The base Veloster 2.0 will come standard with the 2.0-liter Atkinson 4-cylinder engine, torque-vectoring control, split-center exhaust outlet, and a MacPherson Strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.

Upgrade to the 2.0 Premium and you also get a wide sunroof, paddle shifters, blind-spot collision warning, and proximity keyless entry with push-button start.

The perks keep coming as you upgrade down the line, with additions that include:

  • a unique sport-tuned suspension;
  • dual exhaust;
  • all-season performance tires;
  • additional active safety features;
  • leather seats;
  • and much more.

Other Subtler Veloster Updates

Aside from the obvious cosmetic updates, there are others that are subtler yet significant, such as the choice of a six-speed manual or automatic, as well as:

  • Four different wheel designs including standard 17-inch aluminum and optional 18-inch wheels;
  • MacPherson strut front suspension;
  • Multi-link rear suspension;

The new Veloster will be available with two different engines. One is a 4-cylinder, 2-liter motor that provides 147 horsepower at 6,200 rpm. The other is a 4-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that cranks out 201 horsepower at 4,500 rpm. Talk about power.

And there's more to be excited about: The Veloster N is also on its way. It's a souped-up version of the already exciting Veloster that offers suspension mods and additional horsepower (i.e. 275 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque). It's the Veloster that Car and Driver calls "Hyundai's Hottest ever Hatch."

What is the 2019 Veloster Release Date?

The all-new 2019 Veloster is coming to a showroom near you this spring -- and that's just weeks away! So, hold onto your hat and make plans to start scoping out the new Veloster at Jim Hudson Hyundai ahead of time. When spring finally rolls around, you'll have a good idea of which version of the 2019 Veloster you want parked in your driveway this year.
