The 2017 Hyundai Tucson: An SUV Lover’s Dream

The Hyundai Tucson has consistently been near the top of everyone’s must-own list of SUVs, and with the 2017 model, it’s unlikely the Tucson’s standing will change. Offering even more innovative technology than previous model years, the 2017 Tucson has matured into the perfect crossover to tackle everything from daily commutes to long road trips. It’s the jack-of-all-trades crossover in a market where versatility reigns supreme, and it’s available now at our Hyundai car dealership near Lexington, SC.

Here’s what you can expect from Hyundai’s newest Tucson when taking your first test drive.

Loads of High-Tech Features & Equipment

The Tucson is the embodiment of all that Hyundai represents, particularly when it comes to offering value-optimized equipment.

The base 2017 Tucson SE (Hyundai’s SUV comes available in four trims: SE, Exo, Sport, and Limited) delivers an excellent array of standard features and equipment, including a rearview camera, cruise control, A/C, 5.0-inch touchscreen and infotainment system, blind-spot mirror, brake assist, Bluetooth with voice recognition, USB port, and stain-resistant cloth upholstery. Available features on the Tucson SE (some standard on other trims and packages) include a power-adjustable driver’s seat, fog lights, LED daytime running lights, lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, heated seats, push-button start, 8-inch touchscreen, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and pedestrian detection braking system.

New features added to the Tucson lineup include the following:

  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (available on Limited trim)
  • Premium 315-watt Infinity sound system (Limited)
  • Clari-Fi music restoration technology (Limited)
  • Centrally mounted rear AC vent (available on Sport trim)
  • Yes Essentials stain-resistant fabric
  • Hands-free power liftgate (standard on Sport trim)

The hands-free liftgate is a favorite among Tucson owners. Unlike its rival’s technology, the Tucson’s liftgate utilizes a proximity sensor that eliminates the clumsiness associated with waving your foot around in search for that sweet spot. While holding the key fob, just step within three feet of the rear of the 2017 Tucson and recite the phrase, “Open Sesame,” for quick access to the trunk and its dual-level cargo hold. Or if you’re more adult than child, you can stand there for a few seconds to activate the liftgate without saying the magic words. What’s better is the added ability to program the liftgate to be inoperable when too close to obstructions, such as a garage ceiling or another vehicle.

Other fan-favorites include the available panoramic sunroof, which opens the Tucson to the bright skies and makes the interior feel even more spacious; Hyundai Blue Link services with Android Wear and Apple Watch compatibility, as well as SOS emergency assistance through the telematics system; a bright 4.2-inch LCD screen within the instrumentation cluster; and upscale leather seats that match perfectly with the dash and other interior accents.

Safety First with Hyundai

With an overall five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS (carried over from the 2016 model year), the new Tucson offers best-in-class safety tech, systems, and equipment. When equipped with the full suite of crash-avoidance technology, including automatic emergency braking and brake-force distribution, hill start assist, collision warning, downhill brake control, rear parking assist, electronic stability control, pedestrian detection, and blind-spot warning, the 2017 Hyundai Tucson, much like its 2016 version, is built with the safety of you and others in mind.

Powerful Peak Performance

The 2017 Hyundai Tucson SE comes fitted with a standard 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that produces 164 horsepower and is paired with a six-speed automatic. Also available is a new 1.6L Turbo GDI engine that reaches 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, and comes mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that promises a supremely responsive and quiet ride—and boy, does it deliver.

Ride quality is balanced, and there’s little cabin sway thanks in part to Hyundai’s incredible multi-link suspension. Cabin noise is also minimal, which matches with the interior’s overall aesthetic. Tucsons with AWD benefit from Active Cornering technology that provides the traction and power needed to maneuver around tight corners and pass in the left lane, poor weather or otherwise. The 2017 Tucson easily enables you to tackle the busy streets of Columbia as well as the hillsides through Rock Hill. It even passes for a trailering truck with the capability to haul and tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Fuel performance on both engines come in at an impressive 30 mpg highway, and with a 7.9-second time in the zero-to-60 spring, the Tucson is a speedster. Eco models equipped with the 1.6L Turbo can eke out a few more mpg highway (32).

The Critics’ Quotation Corner

It may be the smallest member of the Hyundai SUV crew, but don’t let its size fool you: the 2017 Tucson is a mighty performer that’s bound to take the world by storm. Not only does the Tucson come with a lauded selection of innovative features, safety tech, and powerful engines, it also provides the roominess and comfort you’d expect from a five-seater—it has 102 cubic feet of passenger volume and a maximum 62.9 cubic feet of cargo space—and is outfitted with handsome high-end accoutrements.
